Venice Simplon-Orient-Express: Routes, Cabins & Prices

A practical 2026/2027 guide to Europe's most celebrated train — from the classic Paris–Venice journey to Grand Suites, dining, dress codes, luggage and the details worth checking before you book.

Midnight-blue Venice Simplon-Orient-Express carriages at a European station

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is not simply a way to travel between European cities. Its restored 1920s and 1930s carriages turn an overnight railway journey into a formal occasion: marquetry cabins, steward service, long dinners and a piano bar after dark. The experience is exceptional, but the choices are not always obvious. The route can change the rhythm of the trip, and the jump from a Historic Cabin to a Suite changes the practical experience as much as the price.

This guide goes deeply into this particular train. For a comparison with the Royal Scotsman, Eastern & Oriental Express and other iconic rail journeys, read our guide to the world's best luxury train trips.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express routes for 2026 and 2027

Belmond operates more than a single Paris–Venice service. The calendar changes by season, but these are the journeys most travellers should understand. Published fares and availability move dynamically, so dates should be checked before flights or non-refundable hotels are confirmed.

For most first-time guests, Paris–Venice is the best-balanced choice. The Istanbul departure is the collector's journey: longer, less frequent and far more dependent on booking early. Whichever route you choose, railway timings are approximate and can change because the train operates within several national rail networks.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express prices: what to budget

As an indication, Belmond was advertising selected 2027 one-night journeys from approximately €4,510 per person in a Historic Cabin when this page was updated in September 2026. Some one-night route variations started above €5,000 per person. These are lead-in fares, not a universal tariff: departure date, direction, demand and cabin category all affect the quote.

A Suite or Grand Suite is a materially different product, not just an upgrade to the same room. Multi-night journeys command a much higher total because they add nights aboard, hotels and touring. Ask for a date-specific proposal rather than planning from an undated online price, and compare the complete inclusions rather than the headline figure alone.

Cabins explained: Historic Cabin, Suite or Grand Suite?

Historic Cabin

The original experience and the entry fare. A banquette is converted by your steward into upper and lower berths at night. There is a washbasin with hot and cold water, but no private shower or toilet; a WC is located at the end of the carriage. The compact layout is atmospheric and authentic, but couples expecting a conventional hotel room should understand the arrangement before booking.

Suite

Suites can be configured with a double or twin bed and include a private marble en-suite bathroom with shower. They also provide a daytime lounge arrangement and noticeably more privacy. For many travellers this is the practical sweet spot: the original train's character without shared bathroom facilities.

Grand Suite

There are six individually styled Grand Suites — Paris, Venice, Istanbul, Vienna, Budapest and Prague. Each combines a sleeping area, separate lounge and private marble bathroom. Published Grand Suite privileges include free-flowing champagne, private in-cabin dining, 24-hour butler service and private transfers at the beginning and end of the journey. These are the first cabins we would secure for a major anniversary or honeymoon.

L'Observatoire

L'Observatoire is a single private carriage conceived by the artist JR as a residence on rails. It sits above the standard cabin structure and is suited to guests looking for exceptional privacy and a fully bespoke booking. Availability and price are supplied on request.

What a night aboard actually feels like

After boarding, your steward shows you to the cabin and explains the timetable. Guests move between three historic restaurant cars — Côte d'Azur, L'Oriental and Étoile du Nord — while the cabin is prepared for the night. Dinner is the centrepiece, followed by drinks and live music in Bar Car 3674. Breakfast is commonly served in the cabin before the train reaches its destination.

The train is historic, so movement, railway sounds and compact spaces are part of the experience. It is polished rather than anonymous: a celebration of old-world rail travel, not a newly built hotel placed on wheels.

What is included — and what may cost extra

Premium wines, boutique purchases, some bar drinks, spa treatments, gratuities and arrangements outside the published itinerary may be extra. Station transfers are included on selected routes, not assumed on every booking. We provide a written inclusion list with the quote.

Dress code: what to pack

Daytime dress is elegant but comfortable. In the evening, formal clothing is part of the theatre: cocktail attire, a dark suit or black tie all feel at home. Avoid jeans, shorts, trainers and T-shirts for dinner. Pack shoes suitable for moving safely between carriages and a compact layer for platforms and destination weather.

Space in a Historic Cabin is limited. Put dinner clothes and overnight essentials in a soft cabin bag or suit carrier rather than a large rigid case.

Luggage rules and boarding from London, Paris or Venice

Belmond's luggage system separates bags into three practical groups:

  1. Hand luggage for passports, tickets, medication and valuables, which remains with you.
  2. Cabin luggage — one overnight bag or suit carrier delivered to your compartment.
  3. Through luggage — one larger suitcase stored in the baggage van and unavailable until arrival.

Oversized items such as golf clubs, skis or a folding bicycle need advance approval. On a journey beginning in London, the British Pullman carries guests from London Victoria to the Channel connection; after the crossing, the continental train is joined in France. It is therefore not one continuous carriage from London to Venice, and guests need to manage hand luggage during the transfer. Paris and Venice departures join the continental train directly.

How far ahead should you book?

Nine to twelve months is sensible for peak spring and autumn dates, Grand Suites and limited Istanbul departures. More flexible travellers may find a Historic Cabin on selected midweek journeys at shorter notice. Exact deposit, amendment and cancellation conditions vary by market and booking date; the current terms should be reviewed before payment rather than relying on an old summary.

Passports, visas and entry requirements remain the traveller's responsibility, including countries crossed during a multi-country itinerary. Travel insurance is strongly recommended. If travelling with children, reduced mobility, dietary requirements or medical equipment, ask us to confirm the current arrangements for the exact train and date before committing.

Build the journey around the train

A one-night train deserves more than a one-night plan. Britatlas can pair Paris–Venice with a Paris hotel and private station transfer, then arrange a Grand Canal arrival, a palace hotel, restaurants and private touring in Venice. For special Italian departures, we can continue to Florence, Portofino or the Amalfi Coast without fragmenting the trip across multiple bookings.

We welcome private travellers, couples, families, companies and travel agencies. Send your preferred month, route, number of guests and cabin preference below. We will check live availability and return a tailored proposal covering the train and every service around it.
