What happens on a private Murano factory tour?
From your Venice hotel or a convenient private pier, the boat crosses the lagoon to Murano. How to recognise authentic Murano glass
The name “Murano” is widely misused. Phrases such as “Murano style” or “Venetian inspired” do not prove that a piece was made on the island. The official Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark was established under Veneto regional law and is managed by Consorzio Promovetro; it identifies authorised production made in Murano.
- Ask for the maker's name and the location of production.
- Look for the official mark or clear workshop documentation.
- Request an itemised invoice and provenance for important pieces.
- Confirm insurance, packaging, customs and delivery before shipping.
- Be cautious of implausibly low prices and aggressive “free tours”.
Not every authentic independent artist participates in the trademark scheme, so the absence of a sticker alone does not prove a fake. A knowledgeable guide helps you assess the workshop, maker and paperwork together — without steering you toward a purchase.
Private boat or vaporetto?
A public vaporetto is economical and scenic, but it can be crowded and adds waiting and walking. A private water taxi gives you a direct, comfortable crossing and is particularly useful for families, special occasions, small groups and guests with limited time. Most crossings from central Venice take roughly 20–30 minutes, although tides, traffic and your departure pier affect the journey.

Murano works well as a focused half day, leaving the afternoon for the Doge's Palace, St Mark's Basilica or a private food tour. For a full lagoon day, continue to colourful Burano and quiet Torcello for lunch.
