What all-inclusive really covers — and what it does not
Read the plan name, not the word "all-inclusive". Across the resorts above, the pattern looks like this:
- Almost always included: three meals daily, house beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks, tea and coffee, and non-motorised watersports such as kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear.
- Included only on premium plans: à la carte and speciality restaurants, branded spirits, champagne by the glass, in-villa minibar restocking, afternoon tea, floating breakfast, spa credit and one or more excursions.
- Almost never included: seaplane or speedboat transfers, scuba diving, motorised watersports, spa treatments, private sandbank or beach dinners, whale-shark and manta excursions, and the Maldives Green Tax and service charge unless the quote states otherwise.
Transfers: the cost that decides your shortlist
Transfers are the largest hidden variable in a Maldives budget and they are almost never part of the all-inclusive plan.
- Speedboat (10-45 minutes): roughly USD 150-350 per adult return. Runs day and night, so it suits late arrivals and short stays — Kurumba, Velassaru and Olhuveli sit in this group.
- Seaplane (20-45 minutes): roughly USD 500-800 per adult return, and spectacular. Daylight operations only, so an overnight arrival often means a night near the airport before flying out the next morning.
- Domestic flight plus speedboat: used for distant atolls such as Noonu and Meemu. Cheaper than a seaplane on long distances but adds connection time.
- Always confirm the child and infant transfer rate — it is frequently discounted heavily and can shift a family quote by several hundred dollars.
Best time to go
- December to April: dry season, calmest seas, best visibility, highest rates. Christmas, New Year and Easter carry minimum-stay rules and compulsory gala dinners.
- May to November: south-west monsoon. Rain arrives in short bursts rather than all day, and rates can fall 30-50%. This is when all-inclusive plans give the strongest value.
- August to November: plankton-rich water means the best whale-shark and manta season in South Ari and Baa Atoll — worth building the resort choice around if marine life is the priority.
How to choose in five questions
- How long is the trip? Under five nights, stay on a speedboat island. Seven nights or more opens up seaplane resorts.
- What time do you land in Male? An evening arrival rules out a same-day seaplane.
- Who is travelling? Children under eight rule out adults-only islands such as Baros; teenagers need a resort with real activity, like Siyam World or Olhuveli.
- Beach or overwater? Overwater villas photograph better; beach and pool villas are usually better for families and longer stays.
- Reef or resort? If snorkelling is the point, choose the house reef first — Vakarufalhi, Thudufushi, Baros and Lily Beach lead on this.
