Almost every enquiry we receive about private touring in London begins with the same question: what should it cost? Published prices are rare, quotes vary wildly, and it is difficult to tell whether you are comparing like with like. This page sets out the real cost components for 2026, the typical totals we quote, and where the money genuinely buys you a better day.
The four things you are paying for
Every private London tour price is built from four lines. Once you can see them separately, comparing quotes becomes straightforward.
- The guide. A Blue Badge guide — the UK's highest tourist-guiding qualification, requiring around two years of training — is charged per group. Expect roughly £350–£450 for a half day and £600–£800 for a full day, more for a rare language or a specialist such as an art historian or royal historian.
- The vehicle and chauffeur. An eight-hour disposal in a Mercedes S-Class is typically £520–£640; a V-Class for families £560–£700; a Range Rover or premium seven-seater £650–£780. This includes fuel, parking where possible, the London congestion charge and ULEZ.
- Entrance tickets. Charged per person and the most variable line. As a benchmark for 2026: Tower of London around £35, Westminster Abbey around £30, St Paul's around £26, Buckingham Palace State Rooms (summer only) around £35. The major national museums remain free.
- Access and extras. Out-of-hours entry, private curator-led viewings, a personal shopper, a Thames boat transfer or a restaurant table that is not bookable online. These are quoted individually because availability drives the price.
Typical budgets: three worked examples
Couple, half day, walking with a guide
Four hours in Westminster with a Blue Badge guide, Abbey entry for two, no car. Guide £395, tickets around £60. Total roughly £455. Suitable for guests staying centrally who are happy to walk and use short taxi hops.
Family of four, full day, chauffeured
Eight hours with guide and Mercedes V-Class, covering the Tower of London and the Changing of the Guard, with a lunch reservation. Guide £700, vehicle £620, tickets around £120, lunch charged directly. Total roughly £1,440 plus dining — for the group, not per person.
Corporate group of eight, full day with VIP access
Executive minibus, guide, a private after-hours gallery viewing and an evening dinner in Mayfair. Guide £800, vehicle £780, private viewing from £1,500, dinner charged on consumption. From roughly £3,100 plus dining, which works out under £400 per guest for a fully hosted day.
Where spending more actually improves the day
Not every upgrade is worth it. In our experience three things reliably change how a day feels, and two rarely do.
- Worth it: an early start with pre-booked timed entry. Being inside the Tower of London at opening rather than at 11am is the single biggest difference between a good day and a crowded one.
- Worth it: keeping the vehicle on disposal all day rather than booking point-to-point transfers. It removes waiting, carries shopping and coats, and lets the itinerary flex.
- Worth it: matching the guide to the group's real interest — architecture, royal history, art, food, or children's storytelling — rather than taking whoever is available.
- Rarely worth it: upgrading the car class for a group that will spend most of the day on foot.
- Rarely worth it: squeezing five attractions into one day. Three is the comfortable maximum with time to actually look at them.
Seasonal pricing and when to book
Guide and vehicle rates rise between June and September, over Christmas and New Year, and around major events such as Wimbledon, Chelsea Flower Show, state occasions and large conferences. In those windows the issue is availability rather than price: the best guides are committed six to eight weeks out, and out-of-hours access at the leading venues needs longer.
January to March is the value season. The same guide and the same vehicle can be 15–20% cheaper, museums are quiet, and restaurant tables that are impossible in July open up easily.
